Sex or violence? A pair of lowland copperheads (Austrelaps superbus) battle it out for territory. A dangerous snake with neurotoxic venom capable of killing an adult human if correct first aid is not applied. The fangs of a copperhead are relatively short. It has a shy disposition and tends to retreat at the first sign of humans. It has been known to strike with its mouth closed as a kind of bluff. This film was recorded during the mating season (late summer/early autumn) and shows two males fighting, head dodging, twisting together and eventually biting each other. The winner would earn the right to breed with the local female.
